3 Smile Makeover Treatments for Missing Teeth

A smile makeover can address problems with your smile, such as missing teeth. Having a gap in your smile can negatively affect your appearance in more than one way. Sure, having a missing tooth can lead to a few stares, but it is the long-term effects that you should really be worried about.

Living with a missing tooth leads to the breakdown of bone tissues in the jaw. Over time, this leads to changes in the person's facial appearance, leading to the formation of wrinkles and fine lines.

3 Smile makeover treatments to replace missing teeth

Most people will lose at least one of their teeth over the course of their lives. It can be the result of aging, gum disease, a sports injury or an accident. Missing teeth leads to the aforementioned cosmetic problems, and it affects the function of the remaining teeth. That makes everyday tasks like chewing and speaking more complicated.

Here are some of the popular ways to replace a missing tooth:

1. Implants

Dental implants are the preferred way to replace a missing tooth. An implant is a rod — typically titanium — that is inserted into the patient's jaw. It serves as a replacement for the lost tooth's root.

Teeth roots play a very important role in keeping the jaw healthy. When a person bites down on something, force is transferred from the tooth to the jaw via the root or implant. This stimulation keeps bone tissues in the jaw healthy. Just as is the case with muscles, bone tissues begin to disintegrate when they are not regularly stimulated.

Implants preserve jawbone tissues and they are the only oral restoration that does this. Implants can be fitted with a crown or some other restoration to serve as an artificial tooth. To make things even better, implants do not require any specialized maintenance, so once the installation is complete, it is as if the patient never lost a tooth.

2. Bridges

These restorations are used to cover the gaps created by missing teeth located right next to each other. Bridges are usually anchored down to the teeth closest to the gap. These teeth are often covered up with a crown to provide more stability for the teeth used as anchors. The artificial teeth — called pontics — are attached to the abutments using hidden clasps.

3. Dentures

Replacing missing teeth with dentures is typically the most cost-effective option. These devices have two main parts: artificial teeth and a framework they rest upon. Full dentures are a great solution for those who have lost most of their teeth, while partial dentures are for those who have only lost a few teeth.

Getting dentures is a non-invasive procedure that does not require surgery. It is a great option for patients who are not eligible for implants or who want a more affordable solution.
